Commonly Asked Questions
DOCTRINE & TEACHING
Do you mind if I have serious questions about what the Bible teaches?
Not at all! Our Pastor and Elders all lead classes during the 9:30a Bible Study hour, and we offer a Question and Answer Class most Sundays from 5-6:30p in the conference room hosted by Pastor Dean and Dr. Richard G. Howe, Professor Emeritus of Apologetics at Southern Evangelical Seminary and Bible College.
Are you a part of a denomination?
We are Southern Baptist, and are cooperative partners with the Georgia Baptist Convention and the Lanier Baptist Association.
Can you give me a sense of the type of teaching that is in your service?
Our Pastor takes an expository approach to preaching - Bible in hand, frequent references to Scripture. We work our way through a given book week by week, with occasional break for Seasonal Holidays (such as Advent or Easter.)
Is doctrine important at Midway?
Jesus said to those Jews who believed on Him “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32). We believe this is no less true for Christians today. Being a disciple of Jesus means abiding in Jesus’ word. The thoughtful arrangement of the truths from Jesus’ word is called ‘doctrine.’ We believe doctrine is important because from the beginning of the Church, doctrine has been central (Acts 2:42). Second, careful attention to sound doctrine assures the health of the local church (Rom. 16:17). Last, doctrine arises from the Scripture and is the means by which we grow as Christians (2 Tim. 2:16).
LEADERSHIP
Do you have a Senior Pastor?
Dean Ropp has been our Senior Pastor since our Church was planted 22 years ago. Dean earned his Master of Divinity degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 1985. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and Greek from Bryan College, where he graduated in 1981.
What is an Elder?
The Lord has ordained and He has gifted some men in particular to lead each local church to fulfill His purposes. The Word of God provides for the leadership of the local church through the work of two bodies of Godly men: the Elder Body and the Deacon Body. We are an Elder led Church, and have 8 Elders and 19 Deacons.
EVANGELISM and MISSIONS
How do you view sharing your faith?
Effective evengelism begins with solid, trusting relationships and by example. We encourage and equip our members to help others follow Jesus in all of our circles of influence - in the workplace, at school, on the ball field and in our neighborhoods.
Is the Church involved in Missions?
We are cooperative partners of the North American Mission Board and the International Mission Board. We support numerous Missionaries Families and Organizations through prayer, encouragement and financial support locally and around the world.
